The best hotels we stayed in Italy

During our long Vespa trips in Italy my wife and I have had the opportunity to stay at many hotels, some "agriturismo" and many different types of accommodations.

Sometimes we selected and pre-booked the facility by searching the net but, on many other occasions, we just arrived somewhere, very tired and

dirty after many Kms of travelling under the hot sun, and looked for somewhere to stay for the night.

Here is a list of some very good hotels that stood above the average for their location, kindness and efficiency of the staff.

I wish to point out that the Vespa Wizard is not receiving any payment for this page.

1)   Florence:  VILLA POGGIO AI MERLI     http://www.poggioaimerli.com

Located on rolling hills on the south of Florence, at only 30m drive or bus ride from the heart of the city, this wonderful cluster of self contained

apartments have been built out of a Tuscan villa dating around the Medici period. Even after the extensive renovations the whole place retains the original

looks and feel of the old times. As you step out of the apartment you can enjoy the beautifully kept rose gardens, fruit trees and olive groves surrounding

the complex and spend some time under the umbrellas near the pool.

2)   Como Lake: Hotel Ristorante "LA DARSENA" http://www.centrohotelslagocomo.it/darsena_tremezzo/index.html

This old boathouse was converted into a hotel right on the water with breathtaking views of Bellagio and the mountains behind.

We were so comfortable there, and well looked after by the friendly staff that, after our stay in 2008, we decided to enjoy some

more days at this beautiful place in 2009. Our clean and comfortable room had one window with a small balcony right above the boat pier.

In the evening we enjoyed the excellent food and wine served in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere on the restaurant's balcony overlooking the lake.

Malpensa airport (the main Milan airport) is only at 1 hour drive and this makes "Darsena" the perfect location to spend our last days in Italy

      before flying back to Australia.

An outstanding, family run, hotel where to relax and enjoy the true Sardinian hospitality. Only 1 hour drive from Cagliari Airport, this beautiful hotel is situated at a short walk from Villasimius beach and the village centre where people can enjoy evening shopping, great restaurants and home made icecream. Other stunning swimming spots are only a short drive away.  The hotel is quite, clean and well maintained. A really relaxing holiday.

3) Sardegna (Sardinia island): "Hotel Mariposas", Villasimius http://www.hotelmariposas.it/
